Sean Barenz:
I wasn't expecting too many surprises considering I was hearing 90 minute concert, no drum solo, and your usual suspect of songs, and maybe Steve Augeri losing it on vocals toward the end....well I was actually suprised tonight
Here's my concert review for the Colorado Springs concert on December 8. Let me just say one thing about Journey. They're back, and good god it was an incredible concert. Steve Augeri was on target all night as was the rest of the band. The concert started out with a solo by Neal Schon that kicked into Seperate Ways. The crowd was loud and standing throughout the entire concert except for the times when Journey was doing instrumentals.
They belted out track after track and then it came to Open Arms. And I'll tell you what... we've finally found another singer that can actually do the song right. That's correct, Steve Augeri handled the song beautifully. This sent the crowd into a crescendo. After that they kicked into several instrumentals capped off with a full blown drum solo by Deen Castronovo. This got the crowd really going.
We even got a couple surprises like one instrumental that I've never heard of that they played. Steve sang two other songs I've never heard from Journey before... one was rather bluesy and another led right into Lovin Touchin Squeezin (which the band had fun with)
At this concert... Journey didn't do one, but actually 2 encores. The first one was Dont Stop Believin and Faithfully. Now let me say that in both songs which called for not only some high notes, but sustained high notes, Augeri handled both songs perfectly. Man was this guy incredible with both songs. His voice was clean through both songs.
As if that wasn't enough, they gave us a second encore with Chain Reaction and Ask the Lonely. What surprised me wasn't so much the second encore, but at the end of Ask the Lonely, Steve Augeri went into this long, high, sustained note that he held about 5 seconds or more. This was also as high as he was getting all night and HIS VOICE NEVER FLINCHED!! It was as if to say that after almost 2 1/2 hours of music, that his voice has still got it. This guy's voice has the endurance people... They say this current tour is called Vacation's Over. I think the next tour should be called "Believe" They're back and I can't wait to see them again
Susan Teuber:
I must say I was sadly disappointed not knowing Steve Perry was not going to sing at the Concert. I have not kept up on Journey at all during the last several years. Although Journey was and still is my favorite.
Hearing Journey brought back alot of great memories. Although they sounded good, they were not great. Steve A. has a wonderful voice, but he's not Steve Perry. Steve Perry's voice is so strong and so original. Although It was nice seeing Neal, John & Ross. Journey just isn't Journey without steve Perry behind lead vocals.
Good Luck to all of them.
Tracie Ricketts:
I have been a faithful fan for years and years and being able to go was a dream come true for me. I think the new lead singer is terrific...I hate to admit it, but he's in close running with Steve Perry. He's a very personable guy and if I closed my eyes, it was like I was 16 years old again listening to all my old cassettes.
Neal Schon was in front of me the whole night and he's definately improving with age. He handed, yes handed me his guitar pick which needless to say, made my night!
I love Journey and I sincerely hope they continue with another 20 years of successful music making.
