The intro is sort of improvised throughout the song. The chorus is
picked
in the same style, but the progression is D-F#-D-A-F#-C-D-F#-D-A-F#-C-D.

Same chords, slightly different/extended  progression

The buildup ("It was sad--oh...") is a strummed, sweeping progression
that
goes like this:  F#-G-D-A-F#-G-D-A, ending with the chords F#-C-D as
they are played to end the chorus and intro.

I think this is one of Journey's coolest songs, personally, and it's
fairly simple.
