HISTORY OF JOURNEY, BIOGRAPHY OF MEMBERS AND RELATED BANDS 2.1 THE HISTORY OF JOURNEY 2.2 CURRENT MEMBERS 2.3 PAST MEMBERS 2.4 RELATED BANDS 2.5 TRIBUTE BANDS 2.1 THE HISTORY OF JOURNEY Soon after leaving Santana, Production Manager Herbie Herbert pulled together a group of local San Francisco musicians including Ross Valory (Fumious Bandersnatch), Prairie Prince (The Tubes), George Tickner (Fumious Bandersnatch), and ex- Santana guitar prodigy Neal Schon. Eventually he would convince ex-Santana keyboard/vocalist Gregg Rolie to join the rest of the band. Originally named "The Golden Gate Rhythm Section," a local radio station held a contest to rename the band, but the name Journey was suggested by an associate of Herbie. After playing several performances, Prairie Prince opted to return to The Tubes. Herbie found Aynsley Dunbar (Frank Zappa) to take his place. Their self-titled album, Journey (1975), consisted mostly of instrumental music with sporadic vocals by Gregg Rolie. From the start they went on a grueling tour, trying to gain popularity by playing live performances. Before the release of their second album George Tickner opted to leave the band and was never replaced. With the release of Look Into The Future (1976) and Next (1977), the band altered their style by adding more vocal content. Each album would be more improved in sound than the predecessor, but they were still without a hit song or album. Pressured into finding a lead singer, Journey would hire vocalist Robert Fleischman. Robert toured and recorded with the rest of the band, but was soon fired because of personal differences, plus the fact that manager Herbie Herbert listened to a demo tape of another vocalist, Steve Perry. With Steve Perry on vocals, Journey's style would change again. Their fourth album, Infinity (1978), became their first successful album. Their endless promotional schedule would eventually pay off when the album generated three hit singles "Wheel In The Sky," "Anytime," and "Lights." They would finally evolve as headliners throughout most of their tour. By the end of the tour, the members developed problems with Aynsley Dunbar and he was eventually forced out of the band. His drum roadie, Steve Smith, who was playing with Ronnie Montose, Journey's opening act, would quickly replace him. Their success continued with ensuing albums, Evolution (1979) and Departure (1980), then followed up with a double live album, Captured (1980). Gregg Rolie had enough of living the road and decided to leave the band. Before his departure, Gregg helped pick his replacement, Jonathan Cain (keyboards), who was currently opening shows for Journey with The Babys. For their next album Jonathan Cain fit in perfectly, co- writing all songs, which again would change Journey's sound. From the start, Escape (1981) was a smash hit with the release of the ballad "Who's Cryin Now," followed by "Don't Stop Believin'," and their biggest hit single "Open Arms." The album reached #1 in its second month of release and eventually sold more than 9 million copies. Their follow-up album, Frontiers (1983), was also very successful, going multi-platinum and producing two hit songs "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" and "Faithfully." At the end of the tour everyone took a short time off to work on solo projects. The most successful album was by Steve Perry who produced his own album Street Talk (1983). The album released several singles including "Oh, Sherrie," but he never promoted his album by going on tour. Journey would return to the studio again, but developed major problems from the start. Conflicts arose when Steve Perry decided to produce the album and developed artistic differences between himself, Ross Valory, and Steve Smith, not to mention suffering through his own personal problems. Eventually, Ross and Steve Smith were ousted from the band. Journey would continue unhappily as a three man band. Two years later, Raised on Radio (1986) was finally released. The album was successful, although not as successful as their previous two albums. Tension continued during their promotional tour and after their last performance on February 1, 1987, they all went their separate ways. In mid 1995, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory, Steve Smith, and Steve Perry reunited and started work on a new album. On October 22, 1996, Journey released their reunion album, Trial By Fire. The album was considered successful, especially considering it was their first album in ten years. Sadly, Steve Perry suffered an injury, which has kept the band from touring and promoting the album. Eager to tour after eleven years and Steve still incapable of going on the road, Journey hires a new lead vocalist Steve Augeri (Tall Stories). With Perry's departure, Steve Smith opts to return to his jazz band, Vital Information, and is replaced by Bad English drummer Deen Castronovo. 2.2 CURRENT MEMBERS Steve Augeri -- January 30, 1959 Irving Azoff (manager) Jonathan Cain -- February 26, 1950 -- Chicago, IL Deen Castronovo Neal Schon -- February 27, 1954 -- Midwest City, OK Ross Valory -- February 2, 1949 -- San Francisco, CA 2.3 PAST MEMBERS / CONTRIBUTORS Mike Baird Aynsley Dunbar -- January 10, 1946 -- Liverpool, England Robert Fleischman Herbie Herbert -- February 5, 1950? With the release of Steve Perry's second solo album, the maintainers of Journey Force, Fan Asylum, started a new fan club known as Steve Perry Info Network (SPIN). Sadly, in 1996, SPIN closed. You can visit Fan Asylum's web page at "http://fanasylum.com/fanasylum/". Sadly, they have removed all Steve Perry information and sold all merchandise that was available during his For The Love Of Strange Medicine Tour. Journey's new manger, Irving Azoff (also the manager of The Eagles), has announced that he has no plans to reopen the fan club at this time. 3.2 FAITHFUL ONES NEWS Faithful Ones News is a monthly newsletter for Journey fans mailed to you via regular mail. The cost to receive the newsletter is $5.00 (US) per year. To receive the newsletter e-mail Margaret at "WheelInSky@aol.com" or Laura at "IzOfAWoman@aol.com". For a sample in HTML (web) format visit the Journey Tribute Page. 3.3 WHAT IS STEVE PERRY'S REAL BIRTH DATE? Steve Perry's real birth date is January 22, 1949, not 1953 (the date Journey Force / SPIN used). 3.4 WHAT OTHER BANDS WAS STEVE PERRY INVOLVED WITH BEFORE JOURNEY? Steve Perry, who originally played drums, was involved with several pre-Journey bands including The Nocturns, Dollar Bills, Sullies, Pieces (1976-77), and Alien Project (1977). None of the bands recorded any official material. Although, there is a demo tape of Alien Project, which is believed to be the demo tape that Herbie Herbert first heard Steve Perry sing. The demo tape features the songs "When You're Alone It Ain't Easy" and "If You Need Me, Call Me," plus a few other songs. The Sullies won the battle of the bands in Calaveris County, playing against 80 other bands. The winning prize was the chance to play at the Fillmore Auditorium. In 1977, Alien Project was close to signing a record deal when their bass player was killed in an auto accident on July 4th. Steve Perry almost gave up on music for good. Shortly after, though, he was contacted by CBS, who said the band Journey listened to a demo tape and liked his singing style. 3.5 DID STEVE PERRY HAVE THROAT CANCER? Steve Perry did not have throat cancer. During the writing and recording of "Raised On Radio," Steve's mother was diagnosed with cancer and occasionally he took time away from the band to be with her and to take her to the clinic. In the middle of his For The Love of Strange Medicine tour, Steve Perry contracted bronchitis and was forced to cancel several shows to recover from the illness. After the tour restarted, he contracted severe asthmatic bronchitis. Again, he was forced to cancel several shows and finally the rest of the tour. 3.6 WHAT IS ON THE STEVE PERRY BONUS CDS? In the United States two bonus CD5s were issued which contain extra songs not released on the official "For The Love Of Strange Medicine" album. Sadly, both CD5s are out of print and no longer available. "You Better Wait +4" -- contains the songs "You Better Wait (Long Version)," "Forever Right Or Wrong," "If You Need Me, Call Me," "One More Time," and "You Better Wait (Single Version)." "Missing You +4" -- contains the songs "Missing You," "Melody," "What Was," "It Won't Be You," and "Missing You (Writing Sessions)." There is another CD titled "Truth to the Rumor," but it is performed by a different Steve Perry. I believe he is a guitar player. 3.7 WHAT OTHER BANDS HAVE RECORDED A COVER OF A JOURNEY SONG? They appeared at the end of the episode when Cheech Marin sings the Christmas carol "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" to children at a Christmas party. The other musicians included Clarence Clemons (saxophone) and Carmine Appice (drums). 3.13 WHAT JOURNEY MEMORABILIA DOES THE HARD ROCK CAFE HAVE ON DISPLAY? In San Francisco they used to have several gold and platinum albums, but they were removed (in Dec 96) for remodeling and never put back on display. In Las Vegas there is a gold Infinity album and a platinum Raised On Radio album. In Niagara Falls, New York there is a platinum Escape album. 3.14 JOURNEY MERCHANDISE At present, the only Journey merchandise available is a t- shirt courtesy of Pam Harris. The front of the shirt has a caricature of the band members with the AOL triangle logo on the tip of Steve's finger. On the back of the shirt -- "Journey's Fans-The Faithful Ones, Deep Groove Chatroom and Backtalkers of the MMC and Journey Digest." For more information (and photos) visit the Journey Tribute Page, or e- mail Pam at "Captured27@AOL.COM". Journey - The Guitar Collection (Warner Bros Publications, 1996) contains 15 greatest hits, note-for-note, in guitar tablature format. The book can be ordered through Guitar One- Stop at "http://www.charm.net/~guitar/" or by calling them at (410) 242-2744. Check with the Journey Tribute Page for any additional merchandise not listed here. 3.15 DO ANY OF THE MEMBERS HAVE A TATTOO? Steve Smith has a tattoo on his right shoulder, believed to be a lion's head representing his astrological sign (Leo). The tattoo is visible on several photographs found on the Captured LP and the Time3 booklet. Note: Some photographs are flipped, hence the tattoo may appear on his left shoulder. During a radio interview in December 1996, Neal, Jonathan, and Steve Perry acknowledged that they do not have any tattoos. 3.16 DO ANY OF THE MEMBERS HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS? The members have not publicly released their e-mail addresses. 3.17 DID JOURNEY EVER WIN A GRAMMY AWARD? Sadly, Journey has never won a Grammy award. In 1996, the band finally received their first nomination with the release of their reunion album, Trial By Fire. The song "When You Love A Woman" was nominated in the category for 'Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.' The award went to The Beatles for "Free As A Bird." In 1982, Steve Perry and Kenny Loggins were nominated in the same category for the song "Don't Fight It." The award went to Survivor for "Eye Of The Tiger." 3.18 WHAT IS THE JOURNEY ESCAPE VIDEO GAME? In 1982, following the success of the Escape album, Journey and Data Age Inc. released a fun playing game for the Atari 2600. With it's release Journey became the first rock band to cross over to into the video game industry. The main plot of the game involved getting all five members from the concert stage to their Scarab Escape Vehicle. To get them there you must guide them past hordes of Love-Crazed Groupies and other backstage obstacles. A computerized version of Don't Stop Believin plays in the background. 3.19 WHAT IS THE FULL SIZE JOURNEY ARCADE GAME? Soon after releasing the Frontiers album, Bally/Midway released "Journey," the full size arcade game. At the time of its creation the graphics were technologically advanced. It contained clear graphical representations of each member's head, which was humorously attached to smaller cartoon bodies. The plot of the game was completely different from the Data Age's version. 3.20 BOOKS Journey by Robyn Flans Cherry Lane Books, 1984 ISBN 0-89524-229-X The book contains 48 pages of text and photographs surrounding the history of Journey, from their beginning in 1973 up to 1984.
