Previous Journey News

Mike Ewing was able to locate an article "Retread Rock" in Forbes Magazine (Sep. 23, 1996) which is about the financial aspects of reuniting bands (including Kiss and Journey). It briefly mentions that Steve Perry was an alcoholic. Huh???

Today Irving Azoff called me, as promised, and we chatted for a few minutes. He seemed like a really cool guy.

He said he does not want to start a fan club. Mainly because there are faster and better ways for fans to receive information and doesn't want to have to charge fans for the slower methods. Naturally, the faster and better way to transfer news about Journey is through the Internet (like my Journey Tribute Page). He mentioned that he would like to stay in contact with me to help me any way he could, such as sending me news and stuff like bios and possibly photographs.

Irving also said he liked the idea of preferred tickets (one of my reasons for a fan club) and would to look into it. Possibly offering tickets through my Journey Tribute Page.

I did not want to seem too forward, so I didn't ask him about the upcoming album or tour, but I plan on keeping in touch.

Today several fans informed me that they heard the first single "When You Love A Woman" on the radio this morning. Donna, from New York, said "It is pure Journey!! Steve sounds great.....his singing reminds me of Anyway. And Neal's distintive guitaring is outrageous! The song as a whole is warming and sincere. It captures Journey's usual depth of feelings and expressed in a way to capture your heart and soul. It will be a definite wedding number." Rodney Nabors, in Houston, says they played several songs. "I would describe the sound as being a mix of Journey via Frontiers and a heavy dose of Steve Perry's lastest solo effort. Needless to say, the songs sounded GREAT."

Here is the chorus to When You Love A Woman (transcribed by Donna):
When you love a woman
You see your world inside her eyes...
When you love a woman
You know shes standing by your side...
The joy that lasts forever there's a band of gold that shines...
Waiting somewhere...oh yeah...

Then at the end of the song...they add:
Waiting somewhere...it's enough to make you cry...when you see her walking by..and you look into her eyes...

The new mailing list owner, Dan Stacy, is in the final stages of setting up the new mailing list server. He says it should only be one or two more days until everyone can join. When the instructions become available I will post them here.

Sony Music informed me today that there will be two singles released on October 1: "When You Love A Woman" and "Message Of Love". They also said that the album release date is still October 22. "Message Of Love" has also been played on the air waves including St. Louis (and I think Houston).

Most cities (in the USA) have started to play at least one of the two new singles. If you haven't heard the songs call your local radio and request them.

For a sneak peak Sony Music now has both singles in WAV and Real Audio format. Jasparina's Fan Page also has an additional WAV of "Message Of Love."

Here is a review of "When You Love A Woman" from the Sept. 28 issue of Billboard Magazine. "They're baaaack! The hotly touted Journey reunion disc "Trial By Fire" is previewed by a rock-edged power ballad that should have loyalists fondly reminiscing over such golden hits as "Open Arms." Steve Perry's voice is as acrobatic as ever, and Neil (sic) Schon's grand guitar riffing carries the song to an expectedly bombastic climax. If there's any quibble, it's that the band has largely ignored changes in musical trends. But the familiarity of this record has a warm, comforting feel that older audiences should find quite enticing."

I now have available the complete lyrics to both singles.

The new Journey mailing list is now on-line. Please check out Dan's Journey Digest web page for subscribing procedures, ettiquette, and information on posting.
